February 28, 2013 - To Jesus through Mary

Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,
who seeks his strength in flesh,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a barren bush in the desert
that enjoys no change of season,
But stands in a lava waste,
a salt and empty earth.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary shows us what it looks like to be a “tree planted beside the waters:" one that does not fear the heat, nor the drought, but its leaves stay green and it keeps bearing fruit.  Even as she stood in the world’s darkest hour at the foot of the Holy Cross, she remained planted in trust.  Mary’s Heart teaches us that the greatest human act we can really do is one of surrender, a surrender to Love, placing our hope in the truth that Love is stronger than even death.

So in what or in whom do I place my trust?  We can have a natural trust in loved ones, but even our closest loved one will fail us.  But when we learn to say “Jesus I trust in you,” we can rest in the promise of God’s Infinite Mercy: a promise that never fails for God cannot lie, and our Lord promises “I am with you always.”

More tortuous than all else is the human heart,
beyond remedy; who can understand it?
I, the LORD, alone probe the mind
and test the heart.

Mary Immaculate, pray for us and with us.  Teach us to trust in the Merciful Heart of Jesus and allow the Love of the Father to search our whole heart.  Help us to realize how little we understand of our own hearts: why we desire what we desire and why we have aversions.  Help us to remain planted in that attitude of trustful surrender to God’s Mercy, believing with Hope that God can bring about greater good out of any cross.
